Who Is "Shelly Dubs?"

May 5, 2021

Twenty-four years ago in January I was born, I was the second child born. My dad was a truck driver and my mom was a nurse, we moved around a lot growing up and when my parents got divorced my mom took me, my sister and my brother to the land of cheese and badgers, aka Wisconsin. My stepdad graciously welcomed us in, and I suddenly discovered sports, now racing was natural to me, countless Sundays of my early life were spent with me lying on my dad's lap watching NASCAR. Dad was a huge Davey Allison fan, and we would tune in every week, my dad also had a derby car in his younger days. Along with numerous stories about raising hell in St. Francis, my dad was kinda wild. My mom was a huge Tony Stewart fan, ok no a huge fanatic, I mean scream her head off when Tony did something, haha. My stepdad was a big Matt Kenseth fan, and then you had me who was obsessed with a rainbow car. Yeah I was a diehard Jeff Gordon fan, hell I am still that way, but I loved Chevrolet and I loved Gordon, along with the rest of Hendrick Motorsports. Watching racing on tv was how my passion started, but the first time I walked down to a seat at Wisconsin International Raceway in Kaukauna, Wisconsin, I was thrilled. The smell of burning race fuel and burning rubber just made my heart happy, combine that with the sound of screaming engines being pushed to their limit, I was quickly attached. I spent numerous nights out at WIR watching some of the best late model drivers in Wisconsin, and it was always a blast. My stepdad is good friends with a driver named Lowell Bennett and I remember numerous times getting to talk to him, look his car over and even celebrate a couple championships with him. Asphalt racing was my first love, then I moved to Kansas and discovered the art of dirt racing. Sherman County Speedway over in Goodland was the first track in Kansas I went to, then I ventured out to Colby and saw some racing at Thomas County Speedway. Thomas County Speedway has won me over with exciting racing and as you probably know is where I am writing articles. The origin of "Shelly Dubs". well the story is not crazy exciting, I have been working at Better Built Trailers for almost three years now, and one of my best friends Dylan came up with the nickname. It is not the first nickname I have had in life but it is the first one that I have liked. If you ever hear someone ask for Shelly in the shop they are probably talking about me. You can call me Sheldon or Shelly Dubs, whichever one will get my attention. With all of that being said, I hope you all are enjoying my writing, and I will leave you with this, anytime I am at a track and you happen to see me, do not be afraid to strike up a conversation, I just might talk your ear off.
