Wakeeney Speedway
Wakeeney, KS
By: Sheldon Wickwar
Eighty-four race teams braved a chilly April Friday night at the historic Wakeeney Speedway for the Prelude to Buzzard Bash races. Visiting victory lane were Weston Kraus in the cruisers, Gage Porter in the sport compact, Blaine Walt in the sport mods, Troy Burkhart in the stock car, Morgan Olmstead in the hobby stock and Wakeeney's own Dylan "Dynamite" Sherfick in the modifieds.
The cruisers started the night off with a heat race which was won by Chris Lohrey, their twelve-lap feature started with a front row of Chris Lohrey and Weston Kraus. Kraus jumped out to an early lead and led wire to wire despite one caution in the event. Second was Chris Lohrey, and third was Dakota Bliss who picked up hard charger.
The sport compacts ran two six lap heat races won by Rileigh Flohrs and Brock Leibhart; their fifteen-lap feature started with a front row of Ted Trumbo and Rileigh Flohrs, Trumbo gained the early race lead but by lap two Gage Porter and Flohrs had gotten to the top-two spots. Lap four saw Gage Porter start to close in on the lead, meanwhile Madison Reed had charged to third place. Laps eight, nine and ten saw Porter and Flohrs wrestle for the lead with Porter gaining the advantage on lap eleven. Gage Porter went on to pick up his second feature win of the season, after winning last week in Hays, second was Rileigh Flohrs, third was Madison Reed, fourth was Kyle Mortensen and rounding out the top-five was Brock Leibhart. Hard charger in the event was Madison Reed who gained five spots.
The sport mods ran three eight lap heat races won by Chad Dolan, Brendyn Nordyke and Blaine Walt. Their twenty-lap feature started with a front row of Chad Dolan and Cody Gearhart, quickly Dolan grabbed the early lead, but by lap two Gearhart had control. Meanwhile Blaine Walt jumped to third place rather quickly. Caution came out on lap six, and Gearhart restarted the field, Walt who had been running second, dropped to third place as Chad Dolan got to second. But just a few laps later Blaine got by for second and then the race lead by lap eleven. Lap thirteen saw the final caution of the night for the sport mods, Blaine Walt brought the field to a restart and ran away with the race victory. Second was Chad Dolan, third was Brendyn Nordyke, fourth was Cody Gearhart and fifth was Tyler Watts. Hard chargers in the event were Walt, Jack Kirchoff and Brian Conness who all gained five spots each.
The stock cars ran two eight lap heat races won by Garrett Hager and Tathan Burkhart, their fifteen-lap feature started with a front row of Chris Oliver and Troy Burkhart, Troy got the early race lead on the initial start, but caution came out as Keith Stegman and Tyler Watts tangled in turns one and two. Troy got the advantage on the second attempt at the initial start, and started his pursuit to eventual victory, his third straight at the Wakeeney Speedway. Troy ran away pretty easily, but the battle for second and third were pretty good between Kyle Pfeifer, Kolby Stegman and Jason Rogers. Late in the feature Tathan Burkhart was able to put himself in the top-five. Troy Burkhart won, second was Kyle Pfeifer, third was Kolby Stegman, fourth was Tathan Burkhart and fifth was Jason Rogers. Hard charger in the event was Kyle Pfeifer who gained four spots.
The hobby stocks ran two eight lap heat races won by Morgan Olmstead and Cody Williams. Their fifteen-lap feature started with a front row of Morgan Olmstead and Tyler Heath, quickly Olmstead gained the early advantage and led wire-to-wire as Cody Williams could never gain enough momentum to challenge for the race win. Morgan Olmstead won, second was Cody Williams, third was Tyler Heath, fourth was Dylan Bell and Jonathan Saliba rounded out the top-five. Hard chargers in the event were Bell and Saliba who both gained four spots each.
The modifieds closed out the program, they ran three eight lap heat races won by Dylan Sherfick, Daniel Gottschalk and Tim Watts. Their twenty-lap feature started with a front row of Dylan Sherfick and John Burrow, and by attempt number four at an initial start, the field got going and Dylan Sherfick was shot out of a cannon in front of his hometown fans. Sherfick built a huge lead right off the bat, and once he entered lapped traffic, he did not slow down, as an always fast Jeremy Frenier could not track down Dynamite in pursuit of his hometown win. Dylan Sherfick won at his home track, second was Jeremy Frenier, third was Brett Berry, fourth was Daniel Gottschalk and fifth was Dakota Sproul. Hard charger in the event was Jace Whitt who gained eight spots, other nice runs included TeeJay Janousek and Clay Sellard who gained seven spots each, Kaid Calhoon was able to grab six spots.
Racing action returns to Wakeeney right away Saturday, April 20th for the Buzzard Bash features, green flag drops at 3pm! The modifieds, stock cars, sport mods and hobby stocks will take part in the racing action!
