Wakeeney Speedway
By: Sheldon Wickwar
The Dirt Crown Stock Car Summer Series took a trip to the wild west of Kansas for a two-day swing. Night one was hosted at the historic Wakeeney Speedway where race fans saw exciting racing from the cruisers class, the sport mod class, the modified class and the stock car class. Eighty-six race teams checked in on Thursday night to put on a great show for the fans. Visiting victory lane were Chris Lohrey in the cruiser class, Adam Weber in the sport mod, Jordan Grabouski in the modified and Kyle Pfeifer in the stock car.
The cruisers started the night off with an eight-lap heat race won by Weston Kraus, their twelve-lap feature event was won by Chris Lohrey who started third and was able to find the race lead and pick up the win. Second was Weston Kraus, third was Dylan Pfeifer, fourth was David Kraus and fifth was Dakota Bliss. Hard charger in the event was Weston Kraus who gained three spots.
The sport mods were second on the program, they ran three eight-lap heat races won by Robbie Thome, Tyler Watts and Kam Gruber. Their twenty-lap main event started with a front row of Sage Dinkel and Adam Weber, Dinkel took an early lead but spun out in turn four to bring out a caution, the field went to an original restart that saw Brianna Maughlin and Adam Weber sit on the front row. Weber grabbed the early race lead while Maughlin had to deal with a hungry Blaine Walt right away, who quickly gained the second spot and that allowed Tyler Watts to battle with Maughlin for the third spot. At the halfway point Adam Weber still held a commanding lead as caution came out for a track light malfunction. The race restarted and the field saw a couple more cautions that took some cars out of contention. After a Chad Dolan spin on lap fourteen, the field settled down and Weber led the remaining five laps to pick up his first feature win of the season. Second was Blaine Walt, third was Robbie Thome, fourth was Joseph Cooper and fifth was Jimmy Brozek. The hard charger in the event was Joseph Cooper who gained thirteen positions, other nice runs included Tyler Beaman up ten spots, Justin Meserve up nine spots, Chad Dolan, Brendyn Nordyke and Robbie Thome all gained eight spots each.
The modifieds were third on the program, they ran three eight-lap heat races won by Dakota Sproul, Jordan Grabouski, and Dylan Sherfick. They also ran a b-feature which saw the final five cars transfer to the main event, that race was won by Tony Acierno. The twenty-lap main event started with a front row of Jordan Grabouski and Greg Gustus; Brett Berry quickly found himself in second place as he tried to chase down Grabouski for the race lead. Lap six erased a big lead for Grabouski as caution flew for an incident, Grabouski restarted the field and quickly built his big lead up again. Lap fifteen saw a car lose their engine down the frontstretch to bring out another caution. The event's final caution flew after that restart and Don Geist pulled off. Grabouski restarted the field a final time and ran away to pick up his eighth win of the season. Dakota Sproul and Dylan Sherfick battled for second place late in the feature with Sproul finishing second and Sherfick third. Fourth place went to Kyle Rohleder and fifth place went to Brett Berry. Hard charger in the event was Eddie Belec who gained ten spots, other nice runs included Dakota Sproul up nine spots, Dylan Sherfick up six spots, Braxton Yeager and Tony Acierno gained five spots each.
The stock cars closed out the program as the main attraction of the night, they ran four eight-lap heat races won by Tathan Burkhart, Jordan Grabouski, Doug Holzmeister and Joseph Cooper. They also ran a b-feature that saw Robbie Thome win. The twenty-lap feature event started with a front row of Jordan Grabouski and Kyle Pfeifer, Grabouski jumped out to the early lead but by lap three Pfeifer was battling side-by-side with him. Laps four and five saw Holzmeister close in on the leaders but was not able to get around them. Lap six saw Pfeifer take the race lead from Grabouski, meanwhile Casey Woken had made a charge to the front of the field. A caution occurred on lap seven and off the restart Woken forced Pfeifer and Grabouski three wide to try to take control of the race lead, a couple more cautions came out with Pfeifer gaining control of the race lead with six to go. Pfeifer made the bottom of the racetrack work the best to hold off the Dirt Crown regulars in Casey Woken, Austin Brauner and Jeff Ware. Kyle Pfeifer won, picking up his third win of the season, second was Jeff Ware, third was Austin Brauner, fourth was Jordan Grabouski and fifth was Troy Burkhart. Hard charger in the event was Jeff Ware who gained fourteen spots, other nice runs included Jeff Tubbs up twelve spots, Austin Brauner up six spots and Tyler Watts up five spots.
