Night One Recap

Despite a chilly forecast, the race teams and fans made their way to Thomas County Speedway. It was a great night of racing and there was a lot of excitement in the Colby area. There were eighty three drivers over the five classes, that showed up to put on a show for the fans.

The sport compacts started the show with two six lap heats, winning the first heat was Billy Turner in the 19X car and the second heat went to Ted Trumbo in the T21 car. Picking up the first feature win of the 2021 season was Mike Hedges in the 3H car, he started seventh and picked up six spots to capture the feature win. Second place was Ted Trumbo and third place went to Otto Schutte III in the 19 car. The biggest mover of the race was Mike Hedges who went from seventh to first in the feature.

The hobby stocks ran two eight lap heat races, the first heat race win went to Brady Bencken in the 711 car who had started on the pole, the second heat race went to Bingston Rogers in the 37 car, he started the heat race second. Brady Bencken picked up his first win of the season after starting ninth, Bencken worked his way through the field to find victory lane. The biggest mover of the feature was Bencken who gained eight spots. James Hart in the 20 car also had a good run moving from eleventh to sixth.

The sport mods ran two eight lap heat races, the first heat race win went to the 09x of Brett Berry who had started fourth, the second heat race went to Luke Stallbaumer in the L26 who started on the pole. Tyler Watts in the 77W picked up the feature win after starting second. Cody Williams in the 77 car had started on the pole but an unfortunate spin ended his run early. Biggest mover of the race was Blaine Walt who started tenth and ended up in fourth.

The stock cars ran three eight lap heat races, winning the first heat race was Jason Rogers in the 37 car who had started second, the second heat race win belonged to the 25X of Troy Burkhart who started fourth and the 35JW of Casey Woken won the third heat race from the pole. The feature was a thriller as Jason Rogers stormed from a twelfth starting place to snagging the lead coming out of turn four on the final lap to win the race. Rogers was the biggest mover picking up eleven spots, Chris Oliver in the 3 car went from eighteenth to tenth, and Dillon Reese in the 51 car found some momentum on the final lap to pass two more cars and finish twelfth after starting fifteenth. Reese seemed pretty impressed when I informed him how he had ran, it was his first start at Thomas County Speedway.

The modifieds ran three eight lap heat races, Dakota Sproul in the 08 car won the first one after starting second, John Burrow in the 28 car won the second heat race after starting second. The 3D of Daniel Gottschalk won the third heat race and he also picked up the feature win. Clay Money in the 7 car finished second in the feature and Dakota Sproul finished third. Sproul was the biggest mover of the race as he jumped up five spots en route to a third place finish, Kyle Rohleder, Eddie Belec, and Dominic Ursetta all moved up five spots in the feature.

The racing returns tonight at 7:00 PM with hot laps starting at 6:20 PM. Gates open at 5:30 PM and the pits open at 4:00 PM. The weather looks beautiful for the evening 64 degrees at the start time with 6 mph winds, so come out and join us for night two of the season opener!
