Geist Victorious in Colby

05/27/2022 Fifty six race teams made their way to the Thomas County Speedway in Colby, Kansas for another night of solid IMCA racing action. The five classes put on quite a show. Dave Kappel, Blaine Walt, Kyle Pfeifer, Tanner Clough, and Trevor Geist all visited victory lane. Sport Compacts: (Two six lap heat races, one twelve lap feature) The first heat race featured a front row of Madison Reed and Tyson Plumisto. Reed took an early lead, and started running away with a heat race that went single file rather quickly. Kyle Mortenson was able to move up to second place, and third went to David Ghumm. The second heat race featured a front row of Dave Kappel and Remington Cox. Kappel took the early lead and rode off into the sunset with the heat race win after that heat race went single file quickly as well. Cox hung on for second and third went to Gage Porter. The feature started with a front row of Madison Reed and Dave Kappel. Reed grabbed the early lead, but Kappel was able to get by in turns three and four to lead the first lap of the feature. Kappel would continue to lead the field, caution would come out later in the feature as Kyle Mortenson would slow to a stop on the backstretch. The race would resume and Kappel would continue to lead to win the feature. Second went to Madison Reed and Gage Porter rounded out the podium with a third place run. Gage Porter was the hard charger as he picked up seven spots going from tenth to third in the feature. (DNF) 8B-Kaishen Brack[5] Heat 2 (6 Laps): 1. 45-Dave Kappel[1]; 2. 33X-Remington Cox[2]; 3. 69G-Gage Porter[6]; 4. 28-Chase Cloe[4]; 5. 15B-Brock Leibhart[3]; 6. 18X-Zach Cardwell[5] Sport Mods: (Two eight lap heat races, one fifteen lap feature) The first heat race featured a front row of Blaine Walt and Adam Weber. Walt got the early advantage and never looked back in this heat race, as he coasted to a dominant win over Adam Weber and Brianna Maughlin. The second heat race featured a front row of Troy Bayne and Joseph Cooper. Bayne took an early lead and led the bulk of the heat race, meanwhile Josh Barnhart the sport mod rookie was making moves to the front, on lap four getting by Cooper to take over the second place position. Barnhart would close in on your leader on the closing laps, and would battle side by side for half a lap or so, and got by to take the heat race win. Bayne finished second and Cooper third. The feature started with a front row of Blaine Walt and Troy Bayne. Walt would grab an initial lead and never look back as he would lead wire to wire. At the end of the feature Barnhart and Bayne who had been running second and third would get tangled up in an incident. Walt returned to victory lane, and Joseph Cooper finished second, with Jasen Gray finishing third. Hard charger was Brian Morris who gained four spots, as he finished fourth after starting eighth. (DNF) 17-Garth Griffith[3] Stock Cars: (Two eight lap heat races, one fifteen lap feature) The first heat race featured a front row of Kyle Pfeifer and Jeff Tubbs. Pfiefer took an early lead in the heat race, was able to lead wire to wire, Aiden Miller spun at the end of the race as the checkered flag flew. Tubbs hung on for second, despite pressure from Adam Morris who finished third. The second heat race featured a front row of Dusty Springer and Kyle Clough. Clough grabbed the lead on the initial start of the heat race, he went on to lead wire to wire. Tyler Tipton got to second place and Springer fell back to third. The feature started with a front row of Kyle Pfeifer and Dusty Springer. Pfiefer would grab the early lead, on lap five caution would come out for a spin in turn four involving Aiden Miller. The top three at that point was Kyle Pfiefer, Jeff Tubbs, and Tyler Tipton. Pfiefer would hold the lead on the restart, as Tipton and Tubbs would battle for second, with Tipton eventually getting the spot. Kyle Clough and Barrett Wagoner would battle for fourth behind the leaders, with Clough getting that spot, then getting by Tubbs who fell back to fifth as Adam Morris got around him as well. Meanwhile Pfiefer and Tipton would be side by side coming to the checkered flag and by a slim margin it was Kyle Pfiefer who got the feature win. Tyler Tipton second, and Kyle Clough got third to round out the podium. Hard charger was Tyler Tipton who gained five spots, going from seventh to second. McIntyre took the initial lead at the start of the heat, meanwhile Brady Bencken and Lyle Russell were duking it out for third place. Russell would get off track in turn four and bring out a caution. On the restart McIntyre would lose the lead, Tanner Clough would grab it, while McIntyre dropped like a rock through the field. Clough would win the heat race, second went to Bencken and Russell would rebound to finish third. The second heat race featured a front row of Travis Branum and Levi Jones. Branum would grab an early lead, as a couple cars in the back would slightly touch and bring out a caution. The field would restart and Branum would lead wire to wire, Morgan Olmstead would get to second, Alex West to third, and Jones would end up last in the heat race. The feature started with a front row of Travis Branum and Alex West. Branum would grab an initial lead, and Tanner Clough would move to second, and Russell to third. Olmstead would bring out a caution for spinning in turn two. The field would restart and in turn two Branum would go for a spin in front of the field and Alex West along with Deric Funk would be tangled up in an incident. Tanner Clough would grab the lead on the restart, and he would go on to grab the feature win. Brady Bencken finished second and Morgan Olmstead would rebound to finish third. Hard charger of the feature were both Brady Bencken and Justin Colby who picked up six spots each. Geist would take the early lead, and Kyle Rohleder was able to get to second, caution would come out as TeeJay Janousek went for a ride down the backstretch. Geist would lead the field off the restart, and on lap five Rohleder was able to get by Geist on the bottom to win the heat race. Second went to Geist and Morris held on for third. The second heat race featured a front row of Brandon Clough and Greg Gustus. Gustus would take the early advantage, but it would be short lived as Eddie Belec found his way to the lead on lap two. Meanwhile Dylan Sherfick got to third place, Brandon Clough would go for a spin on lap five in turns three and four to bring out a caution. Belec would hold the field off on the restart to win the heat race, second went to Gustus and Sherfick finished third. The feature started with a front row of Trevor Geist and Matt Morris. Geist would get the initial lead at the start of the feature, but Morris would get side by side down the backstretch to make things interesting. Meanwhile Gustus would make a charge through the field, and he would start battling Morris for the second place spot. At the halfway point of the feature the top five was, Geist, Gustus, Morris, Sherfick and Rohleder. Sherfick would get by Morris on lap eleven to grab the third place spot. Trevor Geist would go on to grab the feature win, second to Greg Gustus, third to Dylan Sherfick to round out the podium. Hard charger of the feature was Brandon Clough who gained five spots, finishing seventh after starting twelfth.
