Thomas County Speedway

Colby, Kansas

Last night we put a bow on the 2024 racing season in Colby, Kansas at the Thomas County Speedway for the Jeff Hartwell Memorial races. It was a chilly but eventful championship night as we saw great racing and rewarded five deserving drivers with track titles. Visiting victory lane as race winners were Brady Bencken in the hobby stock class, Kyle Rohleder in the modified class, Josh Barnhart in the sport mods, Chase Cloe in the sport compacts, and Troy Burkhart in the stock car. Visiting victory lane as track champions were Kyle Mortensen in the sport compacts, Kyle Pfeifer in the stock car, Dylan Sherfick in the modifieds, Blaine Walt in the sport mods and Morgan Olmstead in the hobby stocks.

The sport mods hit the track first, their two heat races were won by Josh Barnhart and Blaine Walt. Their fifteen-lap feature event started with a front row of Aiden Miller and Jack Kirchoff; however, Brendyn Nordyke led the first three laps of the race before giving way to Josh Barnhart. Caution came out on lap seven and Barnhart restarted the field and Walt quickly jumped to his inside. The duo would battle closely until lap thirteen when another caution flew. Barnhart refired the field and led the remainder of the race to pick up his second win of the season after winning June 21st at the Thomas County Speedway. Second was track champion Blaine Walt, third was Brianna Maughlin, fourth was Brendyn Nordyke and fifth was Adam Weber. Hard charger in the event was Blaine Walt who gained seven spots. Josh Barnhart grabbed five spots on his way to the win.

The sport compacts hit the track second, their two heat races were won by Chase Cloe and Jared Coon. Their twelve-lap feature event started with a front row of James Bader and Jason Colby, however Bader had to be push-started, so he had to start the feature from the back. That put Jared Coon and Jason Colby on the front row, Chase Cloe and Jared Coon battled side-by-side to start the feature, and by lap five Brock Leibhart gained the race lead. Leibhart led the rest of the feature but ultimately got disqualified in post-race technical inspection, that handed the race win to Chase Cloe. Chase Cloe picked up win number three of the season, second was track champion Kyle Mortensen, third was Jared Coon, fourth was Ted Trumbo and fifth was Tyson Plumisto. Hard charger in the event was Kyle Mortensen who gained six spots, other movers were Chase Cloe up four spots and Ted Trumbo gained two spots.

The stock cars hit the track third, their two heat races were won by Troy Burkhart and Jason Rogers. Their fifteen-lap feature event started with a front row of Dusty Springer and Wheat Lippelman, quickly Jeff Tubbs grabbed the race lead after starting from the third position and would lead until lap six where Troy Burkhart used a three wide battle to push himself to the race lead. Meanwhile Tathan Burkhart and Kyle Pfeifer were moving to the front of the field, but ultimately could not track down the "Gentle Giant" as Troy Burkhart picked up race win number seven of the year. Second was Tathan Burkhart, third was track champion Kyle Pfeifer, fourth was Jeff Tubbs and fifth was Wheat Lippelman. Hard chargers in the event were both Troy Burkhart and Kyle Pfeifer grabbing four spots each, other nice moves included Cole Younger up three spots, and Tathan Burkhart up two spots.

The modifieds hit the track fourth, their two heat races were won by Nick Link and Kyle Rohleder. Their fifteen-lap main event started with a front row of Nick Link and Mike Bainter, Link powered to the early race, while Bainter fell back. Nick Link was able to lead the first three laps before a very fast car driven by Kyle Rohleder got by him, Rohleder cruised through the remaining eleven laps, Dylan Sherfick managed to find second place but was never able to run down Rohleder. Kyle Rohleder found his fifth win of the 2024 season. Second was track champion Dylan Sherfick, third was Brandon Clough, fourth was Don Geist and fifth was Trevor Geist. Hard chargers in the event were Kyle Rohleder and Dylan Sherfick who both gained seven spots each. Brandon Clough gained four spots to go from a seventh-starting spot to a third-place finish.

The hobby stocks closed out the night, their two heat races were won by Brady Bencken and Cody Ghumm. Their fifteen-lap feature event started with a front row of Allen Snethen and Aiden Miller, Snethen gained the early advantage but in turns three and four Brady Bencken grabbed control of the race lead. Dylan Bell found himself in third place early on, and Morgan Olmstead settled into third place. A lap five caution for Bret Conness allowed the field to catch up to Bencken's rear bumper. Bencken restarted the field and picked up career win number one hundred. Second was track champion Morgan Olmstead, third was Cody Ghumm, fourth was Dylan Bell and fifth was Hayden Ogorzolka. Hard charger in the event was Hayden Ogorzolka who gained seven spots, other movers included Brady Bencken up five spots, Dalton Bell up four spots and Morgan Olmstead and Dalton Hinton up three spots.
