35th Annual Flatlanders Fall Classic Night 2

By: Sheldon Wickwar

Colby’s own Josh Barnhart came out on top of the sport mod feature, for night number two of the 35th Annual Flatlanders Fall Classic. The delivery driver ran a solid race where he navigated lapped traffic and held off the best sport mod driver in Kansas. Eighty-two race teams joined us at the Sherman County Speedway to put a bow on the 2024 racing season in Goodland. Joining Barnhart in victory lane were Jake Schwien in the sport compacts, Cody Williams in the hobby stocks, Tathan Burkhart in the stock cars and Trevor Geist in the modifieds!

The sport compacts started the program, they ran a heat race won by Gage Porter, and their feature was won by Jake Schwien after he and Porter battled it out side-by-side throughout the feature.

The hobby stocks ran three heat races won by Tyler Heath, Cody Williams and Mike Kennedy. Their twenty-lap feature event started with a front row of Kyle Cook and Cody Williams, quickly Williams got to the lead. Lap two saw Gordon French spin down the backstretch, Williams restarted the field and led until lap three when Cash Tubbs went for a spin. A third caution came out on the restart as Dalton Arntt and Kyle Cook went for spins. The field then settled in with Cody Williams leading throughout the event, Brady Bencken tried the top side numerous times but never got the momentum to get by. A green, white, checkered attempt at the finish jumbled the top-five up, as Cody Williams went on to pick up the feature event win, second was Brady Bencken, third was Mike Kennedy, fourth was Tyler Heath and fifth was Trent Matson. Hard chargers in the event were Trent Matson and Bingston Rogers who gained seven spots each. Mike Kennedy gained six spots, while Justin Colby and Dalton Arntt gained five spots each.

The sport mods ran three heat races won by Blaine Walt, Hunter Smith and Brendyn Nordyke. The front row of the feature was Josh Barnhart and Dalton Bell, Barnhart jumped out front like he had packages to deliver Saturday night, as the young gun built a big lead early. Late in the feature event, Blaine Walt would find his way to second place, and closed on Barnhart in lapped traffic but was never able to get around. Hunter Smith also made a charge through the field but had to settle for a fourth place run. Josh Barnhart delivered a win Saturday night in the sport mod, second went to Blaine Walt, third went to Monty Nordyke, fourth was Hunter Smith and Jack Kirchoff rounded out the top five. Hard charger in the event was Jasen Gray who gained seven spots. Blaine Walt and Angel Munoz both gained six spots, and Hunter Smith gained five spots.

The stock cars ran three Heat races won by Jeff Tubbs, Troy Burkhart and Jason Rogers. Their twenty-lap main event started with a front row of Tathan Burkhart and Cole Younger. Tathan jumped out to the early lead, and led until lap seven when Jason Rogers got around him. The duo battled side-by-side for a few laps before Jeff Tubbs went for a spin. The restart saw Tathan get a great run to take control of the race and he survived a late caution to pick up the feature win. Second was Jason Rogers, third was Troy Burkhart, fourth was Quinton Yutterman and fifth was Tyler Tipton. Hard charger in the event was Quinton Yutterman who gained ten spots, and Troy Burkhart grabbed five spots.

The modifieds ran two heat races won by Jake Nightingale and Kyle Rohleder. Their twenty-lap feature event started with a front row of Danny Keller and Trevor Geist. Quickly Trevor Geist got to the lead and the bottom of the track, and controlled the whole feature event, as the track was bottom dominant, and hard to pass. A couple late race cautions allowed Jake Nightingale to advance on restarts, but was unable to track down a fast Trevor Geist. Trevor Geist won, second was Jake Nightingale, third was Anthony Rhoades, fourth was Eddie Belec and fifth was Nick Link. Hard charger in the event was Jake Nightingale with seven spots gained, Mike Bainter and Matthew Ratzlaff gained four spots each.
